Innovation & tradition at KD
Kronans Droghandel’s history goes back to the time of King Karl XII.
Kronans Daghandel was founded by Gustaf Bernström in 1907. Over subsequent years, KD has developed from being a Swedish medical and pharmaceutical wholesaler into a fully-fledged logistics manager for pharmaceuticals and other input goods for the health and medical care sector, as well as a distributor and wholesaler. As part of Oriola-KD we now also have a presence in Finland and the Baltic States.
Gustaf Bernström’s vision was one of creating a small company with an important mission. His vision; to take our own, and our customers’ development forward by virtue of continuous innovations and improvements, remains unchanged today. Our organisation is characterised today by a high level of awareness about what we do and why we do it; accompanied by strong personal commitment and a positive company culture.
• In 1718, Mr Luth, pharmacist and owner of the Strutsen Pharmacy in Gothenburg, was commissioned to embalm King Karl XII, who had been killed at Fredriskhald in Norway. Mr Luth received no cash payment but was instead awarded the title of Pharmacist to the Royal Court - a highly satisfactory compensation. Consequently, the pharmacy changed its name to Kronan (Crown) Pharmacy.
• In 1907, Gustaf Bernström, the pharmacist at Kronan, took over the part of the company which for hundreds of years had been importing and trading in pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Kronans Droghandel AB was created.
• In 1970 the Swedish state took over control of Swedish pharmacies and integrated them in the wholesale sector. At the same time, a single-channel distribution (SCD) system was introduced; characterised by high cost-effectiveness and reliability, and resulting in continuing competition at wholesale level.
• In 1959, the Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry took over ownership of KD.
• 1994: KD became the first pharmaceutical distributor in Europe to obtain quality certification in accordance with ISO.
• 1995: KD commences wholesale activities in Norway via Holtung.
• 1996: KD commences distribution of vaccines directly to the health and medical care sector.
• 1997: KD starts home distribution.
• 1998: KD becomes the first pharmaceutical distributor in Europe to obtain environmental accreditation in accordance with ISO.
• 1999: KD starts green-field distribution of pharmaceuticals with KD Tukku in Finland.
• 2000: KD commences cooperation with the Five non-socialist parties (“Femklövern”) in respect of the service Sjukvårdslogistik.
• 2003: Finnish Orion became majority shareholder.
• 2006: Oriola-KD was created, with the strong KD brand in Sweden, and Oriola in Finland and the Baltic States.
• 2007: Today KD is responsible for distribution of about half of all pharmaceuticals supplied to Swedish pharmacies, distribution of pharmaceuticals to five county councils, "Femklövern” and much more.
• In 2009, the business sector of Healthcare Trade turned into a new company: Oriola-KD Healthcare AB
